It seems that Rite Aid took the role of big brother over the last decade.

It was recently discovered that Rite Aid had been using facial recognition security systems in hundreds of their stores across the US. A Reuters investigation discovered that the company mainly deployed this technology in low income neighborhoods.

The video surveillance system was able to ID people who had previously engaged in potential criminal activity. As soon as the alleged criminal entered the store, the system would automatically ID the individual, and a security agent would be notified on their smartphone. At that point the security guard would see if the ID sent was accurate, and ask the person to leave the store.

Rite Aid disconnected all their facial recognition software in up to 200 locations last week.
