Domino's Pizza Cancels "Free Pizza For Karen" Promotion

Women named "Karen" could redeem a free pizza.

Karen. We've heard that name a lot recently, but what is a "Karen"? I'm sure - for the most part - a Karen is just another human being trying to life their life. Unfortunately, along with names like "Alexa", they've been ruined forever after being assigned a new meaning.

According to's "slang dictionary":
Karen (kair-in): Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors.

How about Wikipedia?
Karen (pejorative): Karen is a pejorative term used in the United States and other English-speaking countries for a woman perceived as entitled or demanding beyond the scope of what is appropriate or necessary

You get it. You've seen "Karens" in the news, or maybe you even know a "Karen" in your own life. I've typed "Karen" so many times already that it's completely lost meaning, anyway.

Domino's Pizza decided to use the term in what they thought was good fun for a new pizza promotion with "Free Pizza For Karens". On Tuesday, they had announced that they wanted to help "take the name Karen back". In Australia and New Zealand, 100 "nice Karens" were eligible for a free pizza. All they had to do was upload a copy of their ID and tell Domino’s in 250 words or less why they are one of the “nice” Karens.

That was Tuesday. Today is Thursday. The promotion has now been canceled due to backlash, with people criticizing the promotion as "tone deaf" and spreading "Karen negativity".

The use of the "Karen" term has ramped up recently due to incidents of people reacting poorly when required to wear a mask and Domino's noted that the promotion may have felt flat, especially in New Zealand because, well... they've essentially "beat" coronavirus already.
